Stonington Board adopts revised 2026–27 calendar, approves curricula and hears update on portables

At its May 14 meeting the Stonington Board of Education adopted a revised 2026–27 school calendar that adds built-in inclement-weather days, retains a Sept. 1 start and fixes graduation on June 16. Assistant Superintendent (acting) Tim Smith reviewed the calendar and the results of a district survey; the motion to adopt the calendar passed unanimously among members present after questions from board members about family preferences and holiday inclusion.
The Board, on a motion by Zach Boudah seconded by Bridget Shirvell, approved eight curricula listed under agenda item 2 a–h after the Teacher and Learning Subcommittee waived a first read on one item and moved others to second read. The Policy Subcommittee reported a set of policies recommended for repeal on first read and will bring them back for a second read and vote at a future meeting.
Acting Superintendent Tim Smith and district staff reported that portable classroom installation is ready for final approval with a tentative construction start date of June 5; the district will pause second-floor remediation at the District Office while engineering firm Fuss & O’Neil continues to monitor for shifts. The Board of Finance raised concerns about insurance related to the office project. Board members emphasized the need to have the portables in place before the fall semester to relieve middle-school crowding.
The meeting also included a personnel announcement: Kristie Bourdoulos was introduced as the new Assistant Superintendent; she addressed the meeting and said she is "very excited to be here in Stonington Public Schools." During public comment, Ashley Tewell praised Deans Mill School, welcomed early hiring efforts and said she was disappointed in how the Board addressed a recent board-member conduct matter; no formal Board response was recorded in the minutes.
The Board heard standard liaison reports (RETIREMENT board updates, LEARN, Welcoming Schools) and student-government updates before adjourning at 7:49 p.m.
