EDA allows local seed seller to use Phase III industrial park land for test plots

The Harmony Economic Development Authority voted unanimously on Nov. 5 to allow a local seed sales operator to use roughly 8.2 acres of the Phase III industrial park at no charge for test planting plots.
At the meeting, Randy Mayer asked the board to let him plant test seed plots on the undeveloped parcel. The board said it would be more beneficial to the city for someone to use the land rather than leave it fallow and the board would not charge Mayer for the use so long as the platted lots were not disturbed. Chris Giesen will walk the property with Mayer to determine logistics and access.
Board members emphasized that allowing temporary planting did not preclude sale or development of the parcel later. If a prospective buyer comes forward while planting is underway, the board agreed it would work with Mayer and the prospective purchaser to accommodate a sale.
Motion and vote: the motion to allow Randy Mayer to maintain the approximately 8.2-acre Phase III industrial park property for planting test seed plots, made by Steve Sagen and seconded by Kerry Kingsley, carried unanimously. The four board members in attendance — Chair Chris Skaalen, Steve Donney, Kerry Kingsley and Steve Sagen — recorded yes votes.
Next steps: Giesen will walk the site with Mayer to confirm access points and planting logistics and will report back to the EDA if a prospective buyer surfaces or if additional board action is needed.
