Council hears multi-field ballpark renovation proposal with six-figure line items; budget meeting required

Line items provided were: Dallas Mill Road baseball field $63,192 and irrigation $47,437; Dallas Mill Road softball field $59,167 and irrigation $20,556; Chipley Street baseball field $75,578 and irrigation $47,437; Chipley Street softball field $98,325 and irrigation $20,556. During questioning, Mayor Mullins asked which field would be completed first; Mr. Billingsley replied, "the field behind Dollar General."
Council did not take a procurement vote on the project at the meeting. Mayor Mullins told the presenters that the scope and costs would need to be discussed in a future budget meeting before the council could authorize work or include funding in the town budget.
Why it matters: the proposal would represent a sizable capital outlay and will affect recreational facilities used by residents and youth sports groups. The council must identify funding sources — and prioritize among fields — before committing funds.
