Council approves school resource officer resolution and backs Stop CSAM Act

The Waynesfield Village Council approved two new resolutions in the meeting's new-business portion: an emergency resolution to establish a school resource officer for the coming school year and a separate, unanimously adopted resolution urging support for the federal Stop CSAM Act of 2025.

Council first moved and adopted resolution 26-6-1 to establish a school resource officer, declaring an emergency so the post can be in place for the 2026-2027 school year. The resolution passed by voice vote with recorded "Yes" responses from council members present.

Council then considered resolution 26-6-2, introduced by council member Nathan, which expresses local support for the Stop CSAM Act of 2025. Nathan told colleagues he recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate for the bill and summarized its provisions: allowing civil liability for platforms that knowingly enable child sexual abuse material, requiring timely and usable data access for law enforcement (reducing excessively long turnaround times), and pushing platforms to use existing tools to stop live-streamed abuse. He cited national reporting numbers to explain the scale of the problem and said local passage would add momentum to federal advocacy efforts.

Council declared an emergency on the Stop CSAM resolution and adopted it by unanimous voice vote. Members indicated they would also take the resolution to the local school board and work with regional law-enforcement partners.

Council recorded the adoptions during the same meeting in which it deferred the water and sewer ordinance debate for further study.
