Activities director reports strong fall participation, new bleachers and plans for men27s volleyball

Matt Mahoney, activities and athletics director, presented the board with a fall activities review and a winter preview, saying participation was up and highlighting several program developments.
"We had a good fall," Mahoney said, reporting that at the time he compiled the numbers about 53% of the student body participated in an activity. He told the board the music program had about 580 participants (some students count twice when enrolled in multiple activities) and that the drama/musical production involved a large cast and crew.
Mahoney described facility and program changes: the district installed bleachers beneath the concession stand for a student section, which he said was well received by students; the district secured several hockey coaches with local experience; and he is in discussions about adding men27s volleyball in the spring, noting roughly 84 teams statewide and the challenge of nearby competition. He said the activity will be brought forward when details are more certain.
Mahoney also described a "working document" he calls "All In," intended to track how many students advance to the next level and the breadth of student opportunities. He said he hoped to have the document ready by the end of the school year and announced a Hall of Fame planned for fall 2026.
Board members asked logistical questions about governance changes affecting ninth-grade participation under the Minnesota State High School League and praised the Unified Cardinals team for receiving a 2025 ESPN honor-roll recognition. The activities report concluded with board members expressing appreciation for staff who supported events and programming.
