Shorewood launches parks master plan process; consultant tour set for June 2

Parks and Recreation Manager Czech told the Shorewood Park Commission that staff and consultant Bolton and Menk held a kickoff meeting and will begin the parks master plan process with a park system tour on June 2, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The plan will include an online community survey scheduled to run June 16 through Aug. 4, and Czech said staff expect to share an initial inventory and analysis by July 1. "They will start things off on June 2, 2025, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a park system tour with Bolton and Menk," Czech said.
Why it matters: the master plan will provide an inventory and recommendations that city staff and elected officials can use to prioritize capital and maintenance work for Shorewood parks, identify opportunities such as pollinator gardens and community garden expansion, and set a public engagement timeline.
Commissioners asked how and when they could provide input. Commissioner Wenner asked whether the Commission would have direct input on the community survey; Czech said the survey will likely be prepared at the staff and consultant level because the Commission does not meet again until June 24. Wenner suggested specific topics she would like included—dog parks, additional pollinator gardens, and Gideon Glen signage—and asked for the opportunity to review survey content.
Chair Hirner asked whether the plan would address tree‑planting locations and noted an interest in guidance for tree events. Czech said recommendations on tree placement typically come from the City’s contractor Davey Resources and that the master plan will incorporate natural‑resource considerations even if it will not specify every tree location.
Czech asked Commissioners to notify staff if they can attend the June 2 tour; he cautioned that only one or two Commissioners may participate in person at the same time to comply with Open Meetings requirements. The consultant engagement and the schedule for outreach and deliverables, Czech said, will be reported back to the Commission as the work progresses.
