Board unanimously extends Superintendent Melinda Smith’s contract by one year

Board Chair Kathleen Herbert moved to extend the contract; Kristin Schultz seconded the motion and the board voted in favor. The motion passed unanimously.
The vote followed public comment praising Smith’s performance. Louise Morrison asked the board to “consider the hard work Superintendent Smith has done for the district and to make account of it all when the Board discusses her evaluation.” The comment was made during the Citizens’ Comments portion of the meeting.
At the same meeting the board also voted to add a communication line item under New Business after a motion by Justin Yong, seconded by Jessica Bolte. Yong told the board that, as a parent, he is having trouble with multiple parent‑facing apps and student logins and suggested the district consider standardizing on a single tool, noting PowerSchool as an example.
Superintendent Smith also delivered routine administrative updates, including recognition of a retiring teacher and an enrollment report showing 819 students for September. The board adjourned at 8:49 p.m.
The extension is effective immediately as recorded in the board minutes; no dissenting votes were recorded.
