Gilbert School Corporation approves School Climate and Title IX policies; one abstention on Title IX
Summary
At its Nov. 20 meeting the Gilbert School Corporation adopted a reworked School Climate policy and a Title IX policy. The School Climate policy (formerly Hazing/Bullying) passed unanimously; the Title IX policy passed with one abstention from a board member.
The W. L. Gilbert School Corporation voted Nov. 20 to adopt two district policies affecting student conduct and nondiscrimination.
On a motion by Theresa Padin, seconded by Jonathan Morhardt, the board approved policy #5131.911 (School Climate), which the agenda notes replaces the district's former Hazing/Bullying policy. The motion passed unanimously. The board then approved policy #5145.44 (Title IX) on a motion by Renee Waldron, seconded by Theresa Padin; Jonathan Morhardt was recorded as abstaining on the Title IX vote.
Board members did not debate the substance of the policies at length during the meeting. The policy committee had presented the bylaws and updated drafts earlier in the agenda. Both items had completed required readings: the School Climate and Title IX policies were brought forward after prior review by the committee.
The approvals were recorded on the meeting agenda as routine policy adoptions; the board did not attach additional implementation directives or an immediate timetable for staff training in the meeting minutes. Administration will incorporate the new School Climate policy and Title IX procedures into district guidance as determined by the superintendent and policy committee.
