Wapello board prioritizes shop roof repairs and discusses elementary roof options

The Wapello Community School District board approved pursuing prioritized repairs to the shop building roof and discussed maintenance and longer-term replacement options for the elementary and auditorium roofs.

Maintenance staff described recurring leak issues and failing seams in the shop roof and shared that a local firm had recently machined a replacement shaft for a heater at lower cost. Contractors recommended seam resealing, silicone coating and spray-on coating approaches; one vendor, Castle Grove, was discussed as experienced with the roof type and able to reseal and apply a coating with warranty work. Board members debated whether to limit initial work to the shop building and patch other problem areas or pursue more extensive spray-foam or replacement work at the elementary building, which would require removing existing coatings and decking.

The board discussed funding options. Staff noted general fund adjustments and moving some department expenses back to the general fund to free savings for capital work; specific contract values were discussed in general terms but no single final contract dollar was adopted at the meeting. Members also noted seasonal constraints for some roof work in winter weather and asked staff to finalize scopes, costs and winter scheduling. A motion to prioritize and proceed with the shop roof repairs carried by voice vote.

Board members also flagged site issues including water pooling at the high school front entrance, batting cage placement, and persistent drainage problems at the girls' softball dugout; staff will research options and report at the next meeting.
