Board hears student reports, PBIS updates and discussion on reporting options

Jacob, the student board member, reported on follow-up from prior incidents and described student work with administrators (Mr. Feldman and Superintendent Melinda Crowley) to find solutions. He said the student council’s food drive exceeded its goal and described upcoming student events.
Administrators and board members then discussed behavior-reporting procedures. Staff described two reporting pathways: an informal option that allows anonymity but limits formal consequences, and a formal option that enables stronger disciplinary measures. Administrators said the formal route is preferred in many cases but ultimately must respect the student’s wishes unless mandatory reporting is triggered. Board members noted the policy language is vague in places and suggested clarifying handbooks and improving communication to students and families (orientation, classroom reminders, periodic refreshers) so students know how and where to file reports.
Middle‑school and elementary staff said they are working on consistent building‑level responses and re‑teaching expectations after breaks. Administrators noted that student support services and PBIS leaders are coordinating practices across buildings to align responses to misconduct and to teach reporting options.
The board identified policy sections to review (student discipline policy 506 and complaints policy 103) and directed staff to consider handbook language and communication strategies to better convey reporting options and consequences to students and families.
