Eveleth City Council approves start of talks on regional fire district with Fail and Gilbert

The Eveleth City Council on July 17 authorized city leaders to open exploratory talks with Fail Township and the city of Gilbert about creating a shared fire district and possibly integrating EMT services. The vote permits a small, appointed group from each community to meet and report back; it does not authorize creation of a new district or any transfers of assets.

Council members said the main rationale is financial and operational resilience: combining resources could improve access to state grant funding and distribution of emergency services. Supporters told the council the goal of the motion was limited and procedural — to gather information and negotiate terms, not to change staffing or station locations at this stage.

The city’s fire chief told the council that the operational side — firefighters and EMTs — has been cooperative and that the departments already work well together, but that elected leaders need to sort out the details. Council members emphasized they would retain final authority and that committees and working groups should report back to the councils and town board before any formal decisions.

Mayor Rome said the proposal is intended to improve service and financing for all communities and stressed citizens should not expect immediate structural changes: the council’s vote was to "start the discussions" and to designate representatives to meet with Fail and Gilbert.

The motion carried after discussion; no formal district formation, funding commitments or asset transfers were decided. Next steps are to appoint the small groups, set a timeline for initial meetings and return recommendations to each governing body for further consideration.
