Council discusses zoning and parking ordinance amendments, and oversight costs for RT 97 project

Union City Borough councilors on July 9 reviewed proposed zoning and parking ordinance changes and discussed potential additional engineering costs for the RT 97 roadway project.
The council agreed previously to changes to Skill Games of Chance and revisited other proposed zoning amendments. Councilors discussed allowing above-ground pools on vacant adjoining lots, permitting sheds up to 144 square feet on skids or pillars that would be removable and removing setback requirements from adjoining property lines (front-yard setbacks would remain). Solicitor Tim Wachter was asked to draft suggested language for amendment and present it to council for further review.
On parking, the street supervisor was asked to calculate how many parking spaces would be available if angled parking were used in Municipal Lot #2; the council has indicated it intends to remove front-end parking in that lot and asked the solicitor to prepare an amendment for final review.
Separately, the borough manager reminded council the RT 97 grant budget included $10,000 for engineering and inspection; she cautioned that if construction delays, poor contractor performance or unexpected subsurface conditions arise, the borough will still need to cover additional monitoring or inspection costs beyond the grant allocation.
Council did not take final votes on the zoning or parking ordinance at the meeting; the items were left for future ordinance drafting and review.
