Union City moves to pursue Broadband Ready Communities designation with EACOG support

Union City Borough Council voted July 9 to proceed with the process to pursue a Broadband Ready Communities designation, authorizing the Erie Area Council of Governments (EACOG) to act as the borough’s municipal broadband champion.
Borough Manager Cindy Wells explained the program offers a pathway to encourage additional internet service provider options by aligning municipal permitting practices with broadband-friendly standards. The resolution would permit EACOG to complete the Broadband Ready Communities Program application and coordinate a required public meeting so ISPs can present options to residents.
Councilor Kerns moved to proceed with the public meeting process and the resolution; Councilor Joyce seconded and the motion carried unanimously. Council members said the borough’s permitting requirements already conform with many recommendations, and the designation is intended to expand choices for residents.
No funding commitment for construction or specific broadband projects was recorded in the minutes; the action authorizes only participation in the designation process and public outreach.
