Dairyland project stalls over soil issues; EDA to help find alternate Harmony site

The Harmony EDA was informed on July 2 that Dairyland has paused plans for its preferred industrial-park building footprint after expert testing found sinkholes and soil issues that make that specific site infeasible for the size and expansion Dairyland sought.
Chris Giesen told the board that while the land remains buildable for some uses, the combination of unknown risks and projected costs made the originally desired footprint impractical for Dairyland’s project and planned future expansion. Dairyland remains interested in locating in Harmony and is searching for an alternate site; Giesen said grants and loan assistance already obtained from the state and MiEnergy would likely be transferable to a new site and that projected TIF generation should be similar elsewhere in Harmony.
The board urged staff to continue assisting Dairyland to find a suitable location. Members also asked staff to examine pricing structures for remaining lots in Phases II and III of the industrial park to ensure future infrastructure needs can be covered.
