School officials highlighted a student-run enterprise called "School Grounds" at the Eastern Pulaski Community Sch Corp board meeting, saying the program gives students hands-on experience running a small food business. The program offers iced and hot coffees, several cakes and cookies, popcorn mixes, and grab-and-go items, and the staff said a new online ordering menu has launched to let families and staff place orders.
A teacher who runs the culinary class described student roles in production and service and said the operation supports classroom learning: the students prepare items, rotate responsibilities during different class hours, and handle occasional catering requests. The teacher noted an upcoming large order — 500 sugar cookies with icing — to support elementary winter parties, a task that will require coordination and batching by the culinary students.
Senior student Ronnie Garbison and freshman Mick Gadina appeared with the teacher to describe what they enjoy and the challenges of the class. One student said the most enjoyable part is tasting product touches while learning food-safety rules. The board praised the initiative and its potential to provide career skills and revenue for student activities.
Administrators said they hope to open the operation for brief windows when teachers allow student access, and that students will staff the shop during certain school periods and events. The program was presented as both a learning experience and a modest entrepreneurial activity that supports other student programs.
