Senate candidate Nanette Griffin urges action on penitentiary staffing and officer safety

At the West Burlington City Council meeting, Nanette Griffin introduced herself as a candidate for Iowa Senate District 50 and outlined her small-business background and community involvement. Griffin described her work in entrepreneurship education and sponsorship of a new county program for students. She then shifted to public-safety concerns tied to the Iowa State Penitentiary, where she said correctional officers have lost collective-bargaining rights and face understaffing.

Griffin told the council she lives across from the penitentiary and reported a string of recent incidents she said included three assaults on officers within a week, one guard stabbed multiple times and another with a broken nose, plus a recent attempted escape involving razor wire and prolonged guard shifts. "We need to have people over there to keep our community safe," she said, urging the council and local leaders to consider how they might support staffing and funding to improve safety.

Council accepted her introduction as a citizen inquiry; there was no formal response or policy action taken during the meeting. Griffin’s comments were an introduction to her campaign and a call for attention to corrections staffing at the state level.
