Bentley Memorial Library reviews budget, flags $1,200 monthly cost for downloadables and reports strong program turnout

At the Bentley Memorial Library's Nov. 18 meeting in Bolton, Library Director Liz Thornton told trustees the library's budget is on track and that annual reports have been completed and submitted on time. Thornton said the budget is due Dec. 22 and that she will review possible increases for dues, fees and the impact of rising minimum wage.
Thornton reported that downloadable materials cost about $1,200 per month and that the library currently prioritizes offering those services because they are popular with patrons; she said the board will re-evaluate and adjust the budget if the cost becomes unreasonable. Thornton also said a new substitute staff member has been hired and is learning quickly.
On programming, Thornton said weekly toddler playtime on Thursday mornings draws about 20 attendees and that a local organizer (a town parent) supplies some materials while the library provides others. She reported a successful hands-on drumming program and a well-attended 50th anniversary celebration with guest speakers. Thornton said Hartford Foundation grant funds were used to purchase outdoor furniture for the patio; furniture has been delivered and will be set out in spring for patron use.
The minutes also record the library's participation in town events: a Book Talk on Nov. 18, Festival of Trees on Dec. 6 (a staff-favorites tree), and holiday weekend activities Dec. 5'6, including a morning 'Read to the Dogs' event and an evening storytime with Santa.
The board adjourned at 4:39 p.m.; its next regular meeting is scheduled for Jan. 13, 2026, at 4:00 p.m.
