Calumet council appoints mayor, seats new councilmember and adopts 2025 levy and budget
Summary
At its Sept. 17 meeting the Calumet City Council appointed Tim Zaren as mayor, swore in Barbara Banks as a councilmember, approved IRRR grant application for a City Hall/library project and set a proposed 2025 tax levy of $249,179 and a $694,321 budget. Several other routine motions also passed.
Tim Zaren was appointed mayor by a council resolution and then recused himself from that vote; Dan Strand moved the appointment and Nick Porter seconded it, and the council adopted the measure. The council then appointed Barbara Banks to the vacated council seat and Clerk April Serich administered the oath of office.
The council approved its agenda with additions (including a Range Gateway #169 Coalition item, a Calumet Church bingo event and LMC dues), approved August regular and special meeting minutes, and accepted the August Clerk and Treasurer reports reporting receipts of $164,808.80, disbursements of $56,062.98, investments of $9,847.05 and a total checking balance of $430,754.90.
On a separate roll call, the council voted to apply for and accept funds from the IRRR for the City Hall/library project. The motion to adopt Resolution #24-09-17-3 passed unanimously as recorded. The council also approved Resolution #24-09-17-4 setting the 2025 proposed tax levy at $249,179 (described in the meeting as a 10% increase over last year) and establishing a proposed 2025 budget of $694,321.
Why it matters: the levy and budget set the fiscal framework for services and tax rates the city will propose next year, and the IRRR application clears the way for grant-funded work on the City Hall/library site.
