Mesabi East School Board approves $1.38M payroll, non-renews eight probationary teachers

The Mesabi East School Board voted May 3 to approve payrolls totaling $1,375,896.60 and to adopt resolutions to terminate and not renew the contracts of eight probationary teachers at the end of the 2020–2021 school year.
Chair Cyndi Worshek convened the Regular Board Meeting at 5:37 p.m. in the Aurora auditorium. Director Pamela LaFrenier moved to approve the amended agenda; Director Amanda Gross seconded and the motion carried.
Under the consent agenda the board approved payrolls, bills and transfers of $1,375,896.60 and minutes of April 13 and April 19. The consent agenda motion was made by Director Walt Hautala and seconded by Director Kathy Undeland.
The board accepted two teacher resignations: Stacie Baribeau, effective June 3, 2021, and Dana Sondergaard, effective at the end of the 2021–2022 school year. The board additionally accepted the resignation of Dan Darbo as boys head basketball coach.
By separate resolutions, the board adopted non-renewal actions for eight probationary teachers, each action taken pursuant to Minnesota Statute 122A.40, Subdivision 5. The teachers whose contracts were not renewed are Dennis Gauthier, Tara Lere, Emily DelFosse, Patrick Kedrowski, John Atella, Kadee Vesledahl, Jodie Barkdoll and Megan Wilkes. Each resolution passed with the recorded vote in favor by Directors Pamela LaFrenier, Cyndi Worshek, Walt Hautala, Amanda Gross and Kathy Undeland; Director Baudhuin was recorded as absent for the meeting.
The board also accepted a $1,000 monetary donation earmarked for eye glasses or exams for students in need, and approved a salary lane change for Tim Hogan from BA to BA+12.
Reports were provided under separate cover. The board set its next regular meeting for June 7, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. in the Auditorium and scheduled a special meeting for May 24, 2021 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting adjourned at 6:32 p.m.
The minutes record motions, seconders and votes for each formal action; members who voted in favor of resolution non-renewals were LaFrenier, Worshek, Hautala, Gross and Undeland.
