Dupont Town Board keeps old street, denies Briner petition

The Dupont Town Board on Dec. 10, 2024, voted to deny a petition from resident Jerry Briner to vacate an old municipal street running next to his property, citing the town’s need to preserve access to utilities and neighboring parcels.
The board’s decision followed research into the request and concerns raised that the street provides the town access to a creek, to sewage infrastructure and to the rear of multiple properties. President Kevin Burnette moved to retain the street; Board Member Lonnie Dicken seconded the motion and the board carried it (vote tally not specified).
Town officials also discussed uncertainty about local sewage mains during the Briner petition review. Sewage superintendent Scott Williams told the board that one main has been located and that a second manhole may lie under a garage; the town said it is still working to determine the second manhole’s exact location. Officials said that uncertainty about sewage infrastructure factored into the decision not to relinquish the roadway.
The board recorded that it is not in a position to vacate streets or alleys that provide municipal access to utilities and that maintaining the right of way preserves needed access for maintenance. No ordinance number or formal settlement terms were announced at the meeting.
The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Jan. 14, 2025, at 6:00 p.m.
