Toledo board approves fence variance for 500 E High Street

Applicants Daniel Hartwig and Katja Broddesson asked the board to allow either a 4-foot chain-link fence or a 4-foot cedar privacy fence to be placed 5 feet back from surveyed property lines along High and Center streets and between 500 E High Street and 506 E High Street. The board noted the request would extend into the required front-yard setback for a corner lot.
The request cited sections of Toledo’s municipal code governing yard requirements: chapter 166.06(2)(1,2,3), 165.24(1)(A) and 165.14(5). The city clerk reported one phone comment in favor of the variance. Board Chair Dallynn Hotchkiss-McEltree presided over the item.
Board member Dale Yuska moved to approve the variance as written, citing building permit #2025-32; Valerie Kaiser seconded. Roll call was unanimous among members present—Dallynn Hotchkiss-McEltree, Valerie Kaiser, Dale Yuska and Joan Hayward-Helm— with no nays recorded and Lance Johanssen absent. The motion carried.
The approval authorizes the applicants to proceed with permit processing for the referenced fence options consistent with local building and zoning requirements. No appeals or additional conditions were recorded in the meeting minutes.
The board moved on to other business and adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
