Walker council approves community-funded band shell after zoning commission flags railing concern

The Walker City Council voted July 14 to approve a band shell project proposed for the city park by the Walker Community Pride Committee, despite Planning & Zoning Commission concerns about the stage lacking a railing.
Planning & Zoning raised a safety concern that the proposed stage does not include a railing. Councilmember Kyle Glenn responded that the stage is only 28 inches high and that state code does not require a railing at that height. Following that explanation, Councilmember Jonathan Wolff moved to approve the project; Councilmember Abagail Wells seconded, and the motion passed 4–0 with Councilmember Paul Nielsen recorded as absent.
The minutes state the project will be paid for by the Walker Community Pride Group through donations and grants; the city is not being asked to provide funding. Council members noted that if the council wishes to donate, that would be a separate decision for a future meeting.
Planning & Zoning also noted it has continued work on a zoning ordinance review and rescheduled its next meeting to July 29, 2025. The council’s approval allows the community group to pursue fundraising and permit steps recorded in the city’s minutes.
The council instructed staff to proceed with the city’s normal permit and inspection processes as applicable.
