Akeley City Council approves paid-leave resolution, OKs county road-treatment contract; hears $39,000 pump estimate

The Akeley City Council on Feb. 11 approved a city resolution to cover paid-leave premiums for eligible employees and voted to hire Hubbard County to apply calcium chloride on Crow Wing Lake Drive, while staff reported a separate maintenance estimate of up to $39,000 to replace worn pumps at a sewer lift station.
Resolution 8-2026, introduced during the City Hall report, directs the city to contribute 100% of the total paid-leave premium required for each eligible employee effective Jan. 1, 2026. Kristi Kath presented the item; Councilor Dan Riggs moved to adopt the resolution and Dale Nelson seconded. The motion passed.
The action follows approval of the consent agenda, which the council adopted earlier in the meeting and which included minutes from Jan. 4, the January Treasurer’s Report, total disbursements of $197,750.22 and total receipts of $150,920.69. The consent agenda also recorded that zero permits were issued in January.
On public-works business, staff discussed a proposed 2026 calcium chloride contract for Crow Wing Lake Drive. Council heard that last year the city paid $2,857.35 for the treatment; this year’s estimate is $3,935.50. Dan Riggs moved to approve the contract with Hubbard County in the amount of $3,935.50; Bobbie Wosika seconded and the motion passed.
During the same water/sewer discussion, maintenance staff reported that pumps at the lift station by Dale are worn. Reid Watson said Electric Pump inspected the equipment and "It will cost up to $39,000.00 to replace everything," and staff said they will seek additional estimates before proceeding.
Other items on the short agenda included a brief police update — Jimmy Hansen reported that the recent community event 'Audrey’s Purple Dream' "went fantastic" — an update that new bathroom construction is progressing pending a plumbing permit with tile and partitions ordered, and a question from Councilor Bobbie Wosika about a reported "jake breaking," which staff agreed to investigate.
Councilor Dan Riggs moved to adjourn at 6:25 p.m.; Dale Nelson seconded and the motion passed. Deputy Clerk Michaella Becker submitted the minutes.
