At the Jan. 20 meeting of the Simsbury Aging and Disability Commission, Jan Beatty outlined the commission’s Age‑Friendly priorities and grant plans.
Beatty said the commission’s focus areas are housing, transportation, outdoor spaces and social engagement. She noted the AARP Community Challenge Grant opens this month with eligible topics that include disaster preparedness, aging‑in‑place, and safety/transportation; the commission discussed potential initiatives such as installing solar tables and Mobi‑mats. Beatty also referenced a prior grant that funded the Oak Hill Smart Home showcased at the Aging‑in‑Place Expo and said a repeat expo with a technology emphasis is planned for September.
Senior Center Coordinator Kathleen Marschall reviewed upcoming Senior Center programming that dovetails with Age‑Friendly efforts: AARP Tax‑Aide begins Feb. 12 at the Library; an Indoor Tailgate event is scheduled for Feb. 7 at the Library; an intergenerational program is planned for Feb. 17 ('K‑Pop Demon Hunters'); and Veterans Outreach Assistance continues Wednesdays, 9:30 A.M.–2:00 P.M. Marschall and commissioners also discussed outreach via a Facebook post and possibilities for additional services such as transportation and legal planning support for people with special needs.
Commissioners agreed to pursue community feedback via the AARP Community Partners form and to continue coordination with the Main Street Partnership on services such as food delivery and pick‑up. No formal grant application or funding decision was recorded at the meeting.
