Grundy Center council hears proposed solid-waste rate increases

At the Grundy Center City Council's Jan. 20 regular session, Mayor Pro Tem Smith introduced a presentation from Alex Tungland of Rite Environmental, Inc. proposing changes to the city's solid-waste collection fees.
Tungland told the council the contractor is asking for a $1 increase per residence for residential trash collection, a $1 increase per commercial tip, and a $10 increase for residential dumpster deliveries, with no change proposed to the per-residence recycling rate. He said the last increase took effect in 2022 and that the city would need to adopt an ordinance to amend official rates.
Mayor Pro Tem Smith opened the discussion; council members asked questions but took no formal vote or ordinance action at the meeting. The council was informed the changes would be effective January 2025 if adopted.
The council's next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 3, 2025, when members may consider ordinance language and any formal action related to the rate proposal.
