Superintendent Mr. Verdugo delivered his annual performance presentation at the Santa Cruz Valley Unified School District board meeting on June 23, and the board approved his recommended performance-based pay award.
Mr. Verdugo reviewed four goals: student achievement and accountability; high-quality staff; school climate; and community involvement. On student achievement he said the district had mixed assessment results but cited improved English-language learner (ZELa) scores and a desire to move more schools toward an "A" designation. "I would love to say I met the goal, but without getting to an A, I just cannot again hold myself accountable for those. I say I approached that goal," he told the board.
For the other three goals—staffing and compensation, school climate and community engagement—Mr. Verdugo presented evidence of progress and recommended that he had met those expectations. He highlighted teacher retention, a reported average teacher salary of about $60,000, program growth (dual enrollment and CTE offerings), facility work (pool and weight room) and community involvement that includes statewide leadership roles.
Following discussion and board comments of appreciation, the board moved to approve the superintendents 2025-2026 performance-based pay determination. The motion referenced a payment amount recorded in the meeting transcript as "4484.50." The motion was seconded and passed.
What this means: the board formally acknowledged Mr. Verdugos performance report and approved the one-time performance pay cited during the meeting. The superintendent indicated this is one of his final comprehensive presentations before planned retirement in the coming years and emphasized continuity planning and work the district intends to leave for his successor.
Next steps: the approved performance-pay determination will be processed per district payroll procedures and appear in the districts personnel actions following the boards authorization.
