City seeks council volunteers for IISC projects including trailhead design and prairie installation

City staff updated council on West Burlington's participation in the Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities (IISC) and asked for volunteers to co-lead several projects. The IISC program places university students and faculty on local projects that include transportation, prairie installation, housing, arts and culture, and trailhead or shared-services work.
Greg said he has reached out to regional planning and local organizations and that student involvement typically requires occasional Zoom meetings plus periodic site visits. He described one example of student design work presented to another community and said the student design option can cost about $2,500 and is included in the program commitment rather than being an extra city expense. "We're saving a ton of money by having them come in and design that project," Greg said, noting student work can reduce typical professional fees.
Council members were asked to indicate which projects they would like to co-lead; staff will finalize project assignments and circulate schedules for the fall. The city emphasized these projects do not create large new budget items and are intended to leverage university resources and community partners.
