Huntington schools vote to join natural‑gas cooperative, estimate $90,000 in annual savings

Trustees voted June 22 to join the East Central Indiana Natural Gas Cooperative in a bid to reduce energy costs for district buildings. Mrs. Babcock told the board the cooperative purchase is expected to save the district "approximately $90,000 savings a year." The motion passed 7–0.
The participation agreement authorizes the district to buy natural gas in bulk through the cooperative’s arrangements with suppliers; Mrs. Babcock said the change addresses a large, surprise line item the district has seen in recent months. After board approval the district must provide a 30‑day notice to its current supplier and execute follow-on agreements with the cooperative and the actual fuel providers.
Board members praised the finance team for identifying the opportunity and encouraged staff to pursue other consortium options for fuel and utilities where feasible. Mrs. Miller and others asked staff to carry forward the administration’s due diligence and return any final provider contracts to the board for review as needed.
The board approved the participation agreement and staff will proceed with the notice to the current provider and subsequent contracting steps.
