Library director reports staff changes, 250th celebration and Passport success

At the May 12, 2026 meeting of the Bentley Memorial Library Board in Bolton, Library Director Liz Thornton reported that a long-time staff member, Mark, has retired and that Sam has been promoted into Mark’s former position. Thornton said the library will post a job to fill Sam’s prior circulation-desk role; Linda and Kathy are covering circulation duties in the interim.
Thornton summarized recent programs and outreach: the library hosted events such as “Composting Vernal Pools,” a “Bald Eagles” presentation with D.E.E.P., and a CT in Poetry program that CBC filmed. She said National Library Week saw strong turnout among adults and children. Thornton reported that 251 CT Library Passport booklets were stamped at Bentley Memorial Library, and described an upcoming 250th celebration in June called “Web We Wove” planned to feature The Dirty Blue Shirts. She also noted upcoming programs, including “Birds of Prey” and “Rocks and Minerals,” and that a Rocks and Minerals display is installed in the display case.
Thornton added that the adult large-print collection has been weeded, moved and reorganized and that the Free Seed Library continues to be successful. She said the library recently hosted an awards night associated with the Bolton Together Hartford Fund grant. The director noted the library will host second graders for activities on May 27.
The board did not take formal action on the items in the director’s report; Thornton’s update provided operational and outreach context as the board reviewed statistics and the budget.
