Danville residents' complaints lead board to keep park pickleball lights off after 11 p.m.

At a Danville Town meeting, board members voted to keep pickleball-court lighting and park-hours unchanged, rejecting a proposal to extend lights to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Residents Dominic Dryer and his wife, Ally Dryer, spoke during the public-comment period against extending hours. Dominic said his home sits ‘‘about 200 feet from that ball court’’ and that while the lights themselves are not the main issue, ‘‘it’s the noise … the screaming later in the night … and music’’ that becomes disruptive. Ally Dryer said the 11 p.m. cut-off was ‘‘really wonderful for our family’’ after the earlier curfew was adopted; she added that their two children, ages three and one, go to bed by 7:30 p.m. and that late-night music sometimes produced vibrations felt inside their house.

After public comment the Chair called for a motion. A board member moved to "leave the hours as they currently stand," and a second was given; the motion was approved by voice vote. A single voiced opposition was recorded during the voice vote; the meeting transcript does not provide a roll-call tally.

Neighbors also raised secondary concerns about trash and speeding near the park; one commenter suggested increased police patrols. The Dryers referenced a ‘‘new Indiana state curfew statute’’ and local nighttime noise rules they believe set an 11 p.m. standard; staff did not cite the ordinance by number during discussion.

The board took no further action on the topic beyond the motion to retain current hours. The meeting then moved to budget and other routine agenda items and adjourned without scheduling a follow-up vote on lighting hours.
