Seaside commission approves draft FY 2627 work plan and forwards it to city council

Staff presented the draft plan and recommended commissioners review it, provide feedback and authorize submission to council. “The work plan is essentially a guiding document to ensure that the commission’s efforts support the council’s direction and community needs,” said Laura Colada, administrative analyst with the economic development team.
The draft lists five priority goals: review and recommend an economic development action plan; develop a Business of the Month recognition program; strengthen outreach to local businesses; support policy and program development related to economic growth; and monitor and provide input on major development projects. Staff told commissioners the commission’s proposed operating budget is $3,500 for the year and that the commission may also draw on broader economic development staff resources for certain activities.
Commissioners discussed outreach and practical steps staff already takes, including monthly business walks intended to identify active managers, vacant spaces and corridor needs. Commissioners emphasized the need to publicize the commission’s role so local businesses know where to bring concerns.
A motion and second were placed to accept the draft work plan and forward it to council; the chair called the vote and the motion carried. Staff clarified that council will review the recommendation during budget allocation (the draft covers the fiscal year beginning July 1). Colada said staff will incorporate commissioners’ feedback before sending the plan to council.
What happens next: the commission’s recommendation will appear in council budget materials; council will decide whether to fund the commission’s work plan as proposed.
