Transfer station DEP soil testing scheduled; board approves KSO dispatch contract and hears compost requests

At the China Select Board’s April 6 meeting Transfer Station Supervisor Tom Maraggio updated the board on pending Department of Environmental Protection oversight and site testing for brush storage.
Maraggio said the DEP is due to visit the transfer station within approximately two weeks to dig a test pit and test soils to determine compliance options and next steps; staff will report back at the Select Board meeting on May 4. In public comment Maraggio noted he has received an increase in residents asking whether the town can provide loading for compost materials.
Separately, the board approved a dispatch contract for KSO with the State of Maine and authorized Town Manager Rebecca (Becky) Hapgood to sign the contract on the town’s behalf; the motion to approve the contract was made by Edwin Bailey and seconded by Thomas Rumpf and carried unanimously.
During Select Board member comments Thomas Rumpf urged caution about social media postings related to the budget, saying inaccurate posts are "harmful and detrimental to all" and reminding residents that meetings are available live and in person for questions.
The board directed staff to follow up with DEP findings at the May 4 meeting and to provide further information about the town's options for compost loading and transfer station operations.
