Hamtramck council accepts CDBG grants for benches and code enforcement and renews workers' compensation coverage

At its June 23 meeting the Hamtramck City Council approved a package of routine administrative items: acceptance of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for streetscape seating, a CDBG allocation to support code enforcement activities and volunteer assistance, and renewal of the city's excess workers' compensation insurance and third-party administrator.
CED staff said the city requested roughly $20,000 to add benches bolted to planter boxes along Joseph Campau to increase seating after the removal of parking meters. Council moved to accept the grant and voted in favor by roll call.
For code enforcement (resolution 2026-104) staff said Wayne County provides $20,000 annually to cities; Hamtramck plans to use $15,000 to pay part of a part-time code enforcement officer's salary and $5,000 for supplies tied to volunteer-driven assistance through the Every Neighbor program, which helps seniors and residents unable to maintain properties. Staff emphasized the funding is limited and cannot cover broad needs such as paying for address numbers for all residents.
On workers' compensation, staff described the statutory obligation to carry excess workers' compensation insurance and recommended a two-year renewal with the AS Group as the third-party administrator. The policy was to take effect July 1 for two years; staff said there were no rate changes.
All three items were approved by roll call during the meeting.
