The Platteville Common Council on June 23 approved two ordinance changes affecting sidewalk cafes and signage.
Planning staff member Joe told council the sidewalk cafe amendment removes an obsolete statutory reference and expands eligibility from a narrow restaurant category to "restaurants, taverns, or other similar businesses" that sell food or beverages. The amendment also removes a clause that would have confined outdoor seating to the area immediately adjacent to a building, allowing businesses to propose placing tables farther toward the curb where appropriate.
"That section doesn't exist anymore," Joe said of the statutory reference, and he explained the planning commission recommended removing the restriction so the city can evaluate specific proposals on their merits. The police chief told council the department had enforcement concerns and said it will monitor how sidewalk cafes operate and "report back" in early 2027 if problems emerge.
Separately, Joe described housekeeping amendments to the city's sign code (Chapter 22.11 and extraterritorial Chapter 25.05) intended to remove provisions that would regulate signs based on content, reflecting U.S. Supreme Court guidance. Joe told council the change is to ensure the ordinance complies with free‑speech requirements and to avoid content‑based enforcement.
Both ordinance packages were approved by unanimous vote. Council directed staff to monitor sidewalk cafe implementation and return with any enforcement observations in early 2027.
