The Foley City Council approved material quotes for a phased replacement of water meters and a remote-reading system at its Dec. 20 meeting.
Public Works staff said the city's current meters date to about 2008 and that new meters will allow improved data profiling, quicker complaint resolution and remote reads. Staff presented two quotes that include meters and the radio-tower relay system needed to reach collection points; the towers enable wireless relay of meter data across the service area. The staff presentation said the software component will be paid from the city's operating/budget funds while the meter hardware and towers will be funded from ARPA allocations already designated for infrastructure.
Staff explained the procurement is phased to avoid purchasing meters far sooner than they can be installed. The meeting included a discussion of an initial procurement quantity (staff referenced "300" in the discussion as an illustrative phase size). Staff said they plan to target the North-side reconstruction as the first large installation phase so that meter work can be coordinated with street construction.
A council member moved to approve the water-meter material quotes; the motion was seconded and carried.
Next steps: staff will finalize contracts and schedule installations in coordination with the North-side project and future budget cycles.
