Keota administrators report enrollment work, safety drills, grant-funded tree planting and extracurricular participation

During the Sept. 12 Keota Community School District board meeting administrators delivered routine reports on enrollment, safety planning, extracurricular participation and finance preparations.
Superintendent Lisa Brenneman said staff are finalizing figures for the Certified Enrollment report and that the district has outstanding questions for the state about the chronic absenteeism policy. She noted a pool/park recognition event for students who improved assessment scores and said the district will begin its Friday professional development sessions on Sept. 13.
Elementary Principal Seth Milledge reported students completed phonics RFGR surveys and iReady diagnostics to begin the MyPaths math and reading programs. Milledge said staff updated the crisis plan using training from the "I Love You Guys" program, completed bus evacuation, tornado and fire drills, and are transitioning the website domain to @keotaeagles.org. Keota Elementary received a Tree for Kids grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources; each section of the elementary is scheduled to plant a tree on school grounds on Sept. 24 with help from Mr. Jamison's agricultural classes. Milledge thanked Keota Advocates for a $25,000 donation and acknowledged a memorial gift from the family of Jerry Flynn supporting the new playground.
Activities Director Dan Stout reported participation numbers and upcoming events: 20 athletes are out for volleyball, 40 combined junior high football participants, and 17 Keota students playing SK football; EagleRock! is rehearsing; FFA has 65 members and will run fall sales; and the second annual Par 3 tournament to benefit the golf team will be held Sept. 29 at Lagos Acres.
Business Manager Amy Greiner told the board that August bank statements and board financial reports were prepared and that September payroll was processed with new FY25 contracts. Staff are preparing for the FY24 audit and finalizing the Certified Annual Report, the FY24 Special Education Supplement and the FY24 Transportation Report, all due Sept. 16; EMC insurance audit work is also underway.
The board did not take formal action on these reports; administrators were providing updates and listing near-term deadlines and events.
