Fairfield board approves 'Next Nest' alternative-education program and multiple staffing changes

Fairfield Community Schools’ board unanimously approved an alternative-education program named Next Nest and several related staffing actions at a special meeting.
District administrators told the board they need to house eight students who can no longer attend the Goshen Community Schools program and therefore sought permission to apply to the state to open their own alternative-education program. Officials said the state requires the application to be submitted by July 1.
The board also approved adding a life-skills educational assistant position at Millersburg Elementary, citing an increase of two high‑needs students in the life-skills program. "Since our last board meeting, we've had an increase of two high needs students to the life skills program at Millersburg," an administrator said during the meeting.
With the alternative program approved, the district moved to add a combined 50% English / 50% alternative-education teacher position at Fairfield Junior-Senior High School to ensure required English courses and alternative-ed credits are covered; the agenda named Monica Kegaris in connection with that position. Board members also unanimously approved a job description for the alternative-education teacher so the district can post the role.
Administrators thanked Jason Grassi for preparing the application materials and documents that allowed the board to act at short notice. All motions on these items passed with unanimous votes from board members in attendance.
