The Fairfield Community Schools Board of Education voted unanimously to approve the second reading of board policy 5136.01, updating the district's rules on personal communication devices to include "smart glasses." Superintendent Dr. Carrie Canon said the change responds to shrinking camera-equipped devices that can capture images in private spaces.
"They can take pictures with these. They can go into restrooms," Dr. Carrie Canon said, explaining why the district added explicit language to the policy. "We're going to give ample warning to the parents this fall too ... and everything will be in the registration packet."
The board first considered the NEOLA-drafted policy at a prior meeting; trustees completed the second read and incorporated the policy language into both the high-school and elementary student handbooks. Administrators said the updates will clarify acceptable use, the district's expectations for wireless devices and the Acceptable Use Agreement for network access.
Assistant Superintendent Monica Kenderas noted the policy change came alongside handbook edits that already reference wireless-device rules. Trustees approved the measure without recorded opposition.
The policy update will be distributed to families as part of registration materials this summer and applied in the 2026–27 student handbooks. The district said it will notify parents before the rules take effect.
