Mayor Marla Keethler used the council's presentation period April 1 to highlight recent and upcoming city initiatives.
Keethler reported a successful Tree Fest with strong community turnout, recognized the City’s ninth consecutive year as a Tree City and noted the 50th anniversary of the national Tree City program. She said the city submitted a Community Development Support (CDS) application to U.S. Senator Patty Murray’s office and is preparing a Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) grant application for the next phase of Bluff Trail improvements.
On transportation, Keethler acknowledged Public Works Operations Manager Jason Kinley for presenting to the Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) about the State Route 141 project as the city explores funding for Complete Streets improvements such as sidewalks and lighting. Keethler noted early discussions about potential parking configurations (including back-in angled parking) as part of feasibility and cost conversations, then clarified that the parking remark was an April Fools' joke and that no parking changes are currently proposed; the project remains in coordination with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).
Keethler also announced the annual wildfire open house is planned for May 4 and will use a new format to allow the public to meet with multiple agencies and access emergency-preparedness information.
