Principals outline course changes, internships; activity director highlights playoff success

During reports at the Nov. 10 Starmont Community School District Board meeting, school leaders described upcoming program changes and recent student achievements.
Elementary Principal Heath Hesse said Grandparents Day went well and that students completed the World’s Finest Chocolate fundraiser as teachers prepare for parent-teacher conferences. Secondary Principal Jennifer Lange said the district’s E2020 online courses are going well and described plans to implement an internship/work-based learning program next year, with an employability skills class required as a prerequisite. Lange said the district is working with Mrs. Rau to pilot internships and with Ms. Schuman to offer Accounting I as a NICC concurrent course and Micro and Macro Economics as AP courses. She also announced a “Dangerous Situations” assembly for students and parents planned for Nov. 18.
Co-Activity Director Mike Augustine reported that the fall athletics season was winding down: the football team qualified for the state playoffs; volleyball advanced to the second round of regionals; Griffin West placed first at Jr. High State Cross Country; and four athletes — Lauren Krogmann, Carley Rosburg, Jagger Timmerman and Caleb Pinion — qualified for State Cross Country. Augustine noted that Lauren Krogmann finished third at state and was named to the Iowa Elite All-State Cross Country Team. The board also heard from Starmont FFA representatives about experiences at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis and congratulated Abigail Krogmann and Makayla Krogmann for receiving American Degrees.
The superintendent also announced a legislative forum in Manchester on Nov. 24 and encouraged community advocacy for rural schools via Rural Schools Advocates of Iowa.
Next steps: Principals and staff will continue planning the internship pilot and concurrent/AP offerings; the district will hold the planned November safety assembly for students and parents.
