Wallingford council adopts amended building ordinance, raises select permit fees

The Wallingford Town Council voted on June 23 to adopt amendments to Chapter 82 of the town building construction code that raise several permit fees.
Councilor Reynolds explained the changes during a public hearing: for building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and demolition permits with a construction value of $0 to $2,000, the permit fee increases from $28 to $30. For work over $2,000 the fee rate changes from $14 per $1,000 (or any part thereof) to $16 per $1,000. The amendment also clarifies that permits for signs, billboards and other display structures will follow the Connecticut State Building Code.
An ordinance committee member asked whether a personal permit application he recently filed required recusal; staff confirmed both permits had been issued and said he was not financially affected. After no public comments, the council moved to adopt the ordinance. A roll-call vote recorded eight yes votes and one no; Councilor Tata cast the sole dissenting vote.
The ordinance was adopted at the meeting and will be implemented according to the town’s normal administrative schedule; the council did not make other amendments during discussion.
