EVELETH — The Eveleth City Council voted to award the community center parking lot contract to the apparent low bidder (bid: $203,645), but the award was made with a council condition that staff and concerned council members meet with the contractor before construction so that trees and sidewalks identified by residents are not removed inadvertently.
City staff presented the bids and identified the low bidder as "Msabi Patumitus" (bid $203,645), which was unusually below the engineer’s estimate. Councilor Alan said he was concerned about tree removal and sidewalk removal shown in the bid documents and asked for an opportunity to confirm exactly which trees are in the project scope. "As much as I am on board with moving forward with [the contract], I would just like the opportunity for myself and council... make sure things aren't being ripped up or torn out that we didn't want torn out," Alan said.
Council then proposed voting to award subject to a pre-construction meeting between the contractor, staff and council representatives; the motion passed on roll call with the contingency.
Why it matters: The community center is a public facility and its parking and landscape footprint affect nearby public space and trees. Council conditioned the award to protect trees residents identified at a recent town-hall discussion.
