Eveleth council tables YMCA request to use city land for youth soccer

The Eveleth City Council on Aug. 18 tabled a late request from the YMCA to use undeveloped city property for a youth soccer program running in September and October, asking staff to get a written proposal with specific dates, hours, insurance coverage and any proposed fees or in-kind support.
Council members said they wanted parity and clear information before approving use of the fields, noting the city had previously received a request from the local school that had not yet been fully defined. Concerns raised included restroom access, maintenance responsibilities, whether the YMCA would provide nets and line markings, and whether a nominal fee or contract would be appropriate. Jerry, a city staff member handling grounds questions, said facilities questions and hourly charges would need to be clarified.
Rather than approve use tonight, the council voted to table the request so staff can follow up with the YMCA and with the school, collect schedules and any proposed compensation, and return to the council at a future workshop or a special meeting. Councilors emphasized they wanted comparable treatment for the school and the YMCA and asked for a written request from the YMCA with the logistics needed to decide on a facility-use agreement.
