Commissioners approve health-department grant coordinator contract, review housing rehab contracts and routine county reports

The Jay County Commissioners on Aug. 12 approved a contract for the 2024–2025 Bioterrorism Grant coordinator, heard updates on owner-occupied rehabilitation contracts and highway operations, and approved routine financial reports and a $10,000 emergency claim to the Town of Bryant Park Board.
Health Department Administrator Heath Butz asked the board to approve the grant coordinator contract for Amy Blakley, who has held the position for several years but had no pay change since 2019. Butz said the coordinator must meet all grant requirements, including maintaining emergency-preparedness documents and procedures; Commissioner Brian McGalliard moved to approve the contract, Rex Journay seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
Nate Kimball, assistant executive director, said he would supply the radon-testing contract copy by the end of the day and an engineering contract by the end of the week so commissioners could review both before voting at the next meeting.
Highway Superintendent Robert Howell reported progress on this year's road conversions (including 1025 W between Balbec and River Road, River Road between 500 N and 450 N, and 450 N between River Road and 150 W), said 850 E near Reiers has held up after conversion, and reminded the board that scoring for the 2025–2028 bridge inspection is due to INDOT by Aug. 19, 2024.
In routine business the board approved the payroll docket, clerk’s report and county home report; accepted a $100 donation from Portland Friends Church; and approved an emergency claim to the Town of Bryant Park Board for $10,000. All motions passed unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 9:33 a.m.
