Sheriff reports pursuit damaged county vehicles; 2021 Dodge Durango may be totaled

Sheriff Larry "Ray" Newton informed Jay County Commissioners on Aug. 12 about a recent vehicle pursuit that damaged county equipment and could require replacement of a patrol vehicle.
Newton said during the pursuit a suspect intentionally locked his brakes, which led a deputy driving a 2021 Dodge Durango to strike the suspect’s vehicle; after the initial crash, the suspect struck a county Dodge truck, causing an estimated $4,300 in damage. Newton said the Durango “is anticipated to be a total loss,” pending the insurance adjuster’s report.
Newton told the commissioners he believed a dealer in Highland still had surplus vehicles available at prices similar to what the county paid earlier in the year, indicating a possible route for replacement if the insurance settlement and fleet needs support a purchase. Commissioners did not vote on vehicle replacement at the Aug. 12 meeting.
No injuries or personnel consequences were reported in the meeting record; Newton said the sheriff’s office will await the adjuster’s report to confirm the Durango’s status and to determine next steps for repair or replacement.
