New beaver activity at Quarry Pond prompts immediate mitigation and follow-up

At the June 11 meeting, Chair Tom Soboleski reported new beaver activity at Quarry Pond that had created flooding around glacial boulders.
Soboleski said he and Ryan Welch, the town’s Public Works Director, examined the site; Welch sent a backhoe to break up new dams that were flooding the area. Commissioner Jim O’Brien suggested the commission consult Beaver Solutions to explore additional management options; Soboleski said he will follow up on that recommendation.
The commission did not record any formal vote on beaver management at the June 11 meeting; the minutes indicate follow-up actions will be coordinated between the chair, Public Works, and any consultants retained. The June 4 DEEP forester inspection (reported elsewhere in the meeting) also noted beaver activity while recommending a forest management plan for certain areas of the preserve.
