Council OKs $442,430 contract to renovate Unity and Brazos park fields; work to begin this summer
Summary
City awarded SportsField Solutions LLC a $442,430 contract (2022 bond funds) for irrigation replacement, grading, soil amendment and hydromulch at Unity Park flex field and the Brazos Park flag-football area; staff said construction would displace unscheduled play for about 90 days and that outreach will notify users.

Mr. Stevens told the council that Unity Park’s flex field and the Brazos Park flag-football area suffer from inadequate irrigation coverage, compaction and uneven grades that limit turf health and safety. Staff recommended and council approved a contract with SportsField Solutions LLC to remove failing irrigation systems, install a new head-to-head irrigation layout (new pipe, heads and a separate meter at Unity), laser-grade, incorporate sandy-loam material and hydromulch with sports turf seed. The combined contract price for both parks is $442,430 (funded from the 2022 bond program) and an additional meter cost for Unity will be covered by bond contingency.
Staff said construction would start this summer and run roughly 90 days; the contractor is ready to begin pending approval. Council asked about displacement of informal users and teams; staff said they would notify groups, coordinate with neighborhood sports and suggest alternate sites (Double Tree and other parks) during construction, and that they would post signs and outreach about herbicide timing and temporary closures. Council approved the contract by majority voice vote.
