Council approves traffic control for May 2 "Lead the Way" Derby Day 5K

He said most of the route could be managed with cones, the sidewalk on the bridge and volunteers, and that a single police assignment at the Chestnut Street signal would be requested to direct traffic during the busiest stretch.
"We really wanted to grow into a bigger event that serves more people in the community," Broom said, explaining the shift from a five-mile course to a community-friendly 5K and use of the fairgrounds for staging. Vice President Rachel Kerman and Chief Kerman were present to discuss logistics and public-safety needs.
Council members pressed for clarity on staffing and volunteer plans and asked staff to coordinate with the parks department and police chief on the final traffic-control plan. The council took a motion to allow the event to move forward with the described traffic controls and to request the required police presence; the transcript does not record a formal roll-call tally.
