Council reviews sidewalk, no-parking posts and school-crosswalk signs to improve pedestrian safety

The Corydon Town Council spent part of its meeting on pedestrian-safety and parking measures, reviewing a concrete-only sidewalk design at Elm and Walnut, INDOT-approved no-parking marker posts for a recurring illegal parking problem and a proposed school crosswalk signage project.

The manager said fieldwork for the Elm–Walnut sidewalk is complete and presented final plans that follow the council’s earlier direction to use concrete only, without pavers or landscaping. He asked for the council’s approval to proceed with construction.

On parking enforcement, the manager reported INDOT permission to install white delineation marker posts along the no‑parking zone and presented a quote for 25 posts totaling $1,964.50 (installation included). He framed the posts as a practical measure to address ongoing parking and food-truck use on both sides of the street.

For school safety, the manager said two crosswalk-sign assemblies (back-to-back sign posts) would cost about $27,000 and that the school corporation intended to ask its board to split the cost 50/50 with the town. He requested authority to order signs and, with council permission, to spend up to $25,000 now toward the town’s share so the signs could be installed before school started the following week.

The manager said CNR crews already are on-site for school-area construction and recommended immediate ordering so crosswalk paint and signage could be in place before classes resume. The council discussed funding, coordination with the school corporation and scheduling; the transcript records the manager’s request to proceed but does not record a formal roll-call vote on these items.
