Board adopts parks fee schedule to tackle deferred maintenance; cancellation fee to rise

Colter Chisholm presented proposed fee amendments for the Ventura County Parks Department, saying new revenues will help reduce a deferred maintenance backlog the department estimates at $20 million. The changes include small per-site adjustments to RV camping rates, modest increases for tent camping and regularly used amenities, and an increased cancellation fee the department says will discourage speculative or block-booking behavior.
Chisholm asked the Board to authorize the General Services director to establish short-term pilot rates when new facilities open (with Board approval to follow within a year). No public protests were raised during the hearing and the Board adopted the fee schedule effective July 1.
Supervisor Long commented that annualized rate adjustments average about 2% per year relative to earlier changes and supported the plan to target revenue toward amenity improvements and deferred maintenance.
